The flashiest cocktails in Paris come from one of its most discriminating addresses. The bar at the Plaza Athenee has two lounge areas, the first is surrounding a long illuminated bar made entirely of sculpted and sandblasted glass made to resemble an iceberg. The second is a more cozy area with leather club chairs clustered on an immense tufted rug, both of which are designed by Patrick Jouin - the man responsible for the interior spaces of most Alain Ducasse restaurants. The concept of the bar is to respect its history, while at the same time introducing fresh and contemporary touches with an overall ambiance that is warm and surprising, elegant and sexy, nuanced and electric. The bar has created the Fashion Ice, translucent and alcoholic ice pop or better known as really classy jelly shots by Americans. They come in five different flavors, apple green, bellini yellow, cosmopolitan red and pina colada white.
Tips
If you can't score entry into the bar are afraid you don't meet the hip quota, make your way to the adjacent Galerie des Gobelins that's a bit more lenient at the door.
Last Word
Bring cash as the French hate American charge cards. Arrive early on weekends and be sure to wear your flashiest haute couture.
